Former PM Karki appeals for good governance on anniversary of Gen Z movement

KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister Sushila Karki has appealed to everyone to fulfil their duty from their respective places for good governance and transformation by remaining sincere, responsible and alert. She made the call in a social media post on Tuesday on the occasion of the completion of one year of the Gen Z movement.

Emphasising the central message of the movement, Karki stated, "The Gen Z movement has given a clear message to the state and political leadership: without good governance, even a two-thirds majority in Parliament cannot deliver stability. Political stability is determined by the character and working style of the rulers, not by parliamentary arithmetic. Therefore, I expect the government to work effectively to ensure good governance, corruption control, rule of law and respect for citizens."

Recalling the incident in which innocent young people lost their lives while raising their voices on the streets and digital networks demanding good governance, accountability, transparency and a bright future, she noted the heavy toll of the movement.

"One year ago on this very day, a painful incident occurred in the history of the country. When young people raised their voices from the streets and digital networks demanding good governance, accountability, transparency and a bright future, innocent youth lost their lives in the name of suppressing that voice. Many young people were injured, having to bear the pain of lifelong disability," Karki wrote.

"I pay my heartfelt tribute to all the warriors who were martyred in that incident. I wish a speedy recovery to the injured," she added.

Karki, also a former chief justice, noted that massive damage was caused to private and public property during the movement, resulting in the loss of national heritage sites and treasures. Stating that such a day must never be repeated, she urged people to fulfil their duties responsibly to prevent a situation where citizens feel forced to take to the streets again.

The former prime minister also highlighted that the country is facing another painful challenge following the Bhotekoshi flood, less than a year after the movement.

"Within less than a year of the massive loss of life and property caused by the Gen Z movement, we are currently passing through another painful situation of the Bhotekoshi flood. In this sorrowful hour, we must present ourselves with even greater patience, responsibility and unity. Supporting one another and offering solace in pain, let us face this disaster together in solidarity," Karki wrote.
